Today we check in on the progress made at Contract 883's Cantonment station in the month of August 2023. Works have proceeded to reinstate the former Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM, Malayan Railways) platforms that were removed to allow works for the Cantonment station to proceed. The removed platform canopies were conserved & stored off site till works were sufficiently completed for their reinstallation at the original site. Besides this, the station exits are slowly becoming more apparent as well. We'll take a closer look at these in this post.

The removed KTM platform canopies were stored at the site of the former KTM depot in Kampung Bahru. KTM coaches used to be stabled here as the southern terminus of the KTM network. The site was since cleared upon the handover of land from Malaysia back to Singapore in 2011 when KTM operations ceased. The site was then reused for the storage of the platform canopies during the duration of works for Cantonment station.

With works to the station box completed, the KTM platform canopies are progressively being brought out of storage and reinstated to their original locations above the new station. The canopies can be seen with weather protection in the form of corrugated metal sheets being installed on top until work to join them with epoxy can be completed. The canopies will likely need to undergo waterproofing works as well, to ensure that there are no leaks where they have been joined back together.

Station layout of exits

Cantonment station will have a total of 4 exits with the potential for a few more to be added on at later stages, when the time warrants it. In line with the network-wide signage revamp, new station will no longer use alphabets to indicate the station exits but use numbers instead. For the purpose of this post, we will be referring to the station exits by numbers. Here is the new exit numbering & their respective locations.

The structures for the 4 exits of the station are beginning to take shape. Exit 1 is likely to feature a layout similar to Rochor station's Exit A being fitted with only lifts & stairs. A cylindrically shaped shaft can be seen at the site. Through circulars, we also know that the base slab of the underpass connection has been cast fairly recently.

Exit 2 appears to be one of the most advanced of the 4 exits. The exit's structure has begun to reach the surface level with casting works for equipment & electrical shafts underway. There is only 1 layer of struts remaining here, as opposed to the 2 or 3 previously observed.

Mining works for the underpass connecting Exit 3 to the station box completed in August 2023. As such, structural works to construct the exit up to ground level have not yet commenced. These works are expected to take place progressively up to June 2024, according to circulars seen on the Telegram channel.

Lastly, exit 4 is now partially obscured from aerial view due to the platform canopies being reinstated. Nonetheless, part of the exit's structure can be observed with an opening likely for the escalators and stairs visible. Work will continue to allow the completion of the ground-level components.

Great progress has been observed overall at the contract 883 site. We look forward to more milestones being achieved and will report back with updates when possible. Till the next update then!

  1. Now CCL6 Stations are also using numbers instead of letters. There might be plans to do the same for the rest of the CCL Stations.
