Reviewing Keppel

A view towards the south of the station work site. This is towards the western end of the station.

On National Day, we conducted a virtual tour on the SG MRT Construction (SgMC) Instagram channel. During the tour, we covered several stations along the Circle Line and we'll be featuring some additional shots that we hadn't showcased on the Instagram channel during the tour.

A construction opening that allows materials to be brought down into
the lower levels of the station box. Eventually this opening may be closed
up once structural completion is achieved.

A close up view of the construction opening. The fan and hose supplies
fresh air into or extracts stale air from the station box.

A view of the station towards the east.

Another view further east.

A view of the construction decking towards the east.

More construction decking which allows heavy machinery to access
the openings in the roof level.

Lots of rebar on site still, indicating that some structural works are still
ongoing.

A view of the station site towards the west. Some struts are visible.

A view on the eastern end of the station. The triple
cell box culvert can be seen here - a drain of sorts that
runs across the station site.

Due to the top-down nature of construction, it is not very easy to see what happens underground. The top-down method refers to constructing the top-most portions permanent structures first to provide additional support and is typically used in areas with weak soil conditions or areas that are built up. This helps to avoid a similar scenario as the unfortunate Nicoll Highway collapse back in 2004 - the site was a deep excavation site using the bottom-up method to construct stacked tunnels towards the station.

Nonetheless, from ministerial posts, we know that the station structure underground is largely completed. Works appear to still be continuing to construct the various internal rooms and facilities before work progresses upwards onto the exits which will slowly become visible at street level. This station also includes a subway underneath Keppel Road which will connect to an exit near the distripark.

Recently we also came across a video flythrough of Keppel station. Do take a look.
